Because there's no parole in the federal prison system, Anthony J. Enrico, 60, will have to serve nearly all of the sentence.
Enrico told a U.S. District Court judge in Newark last October that he billed for more than 150,000 physical therapy sessions that were conducted by unlicensed and unqualified personnel from January 2007 through May 2016.
Medicare and private insurers require that physical therapy services be conducted only by individuals such as Enrico who meet certain criteria based on training and certifications, Acting U.S. Craig Carpenito.
Enrico, of North Haledon, also is facing state prosecution on charges of prescribing large quantities of painkillers to patients without any legitimate medical purpose while prescribing other drugs to treat conditions unrelated to podiatry.
Carpenito credited special agents of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General and the FBI with the investigation leading to the plea, secured by Senior Litigation Counsel Joseph N. Minish of his Health Care and Government Fraud Unit and Assistant U.S. Attorney Elaine Lou of his Criminal Division.
